Carbon Neutral Chicken Production

Project

AgroTech is a part of a project to map and document the climate impact in the production of conventional chickens and ecological eggs in Denmark. The aim is to increase knowledge and reduce resource consumption and thus contribute to a reduction in the climate impact.

Challenges

Knowledge Centre for Agriculture, poultry manages the project and AgroTech takes care of the LCA calculations and reviews. The aim is to increase knowledge and especially knowledge about the climate impact in the production of broiler chickens and ecological eggs. The Knowledge Centre experiences an enhanced demand for consultancy on sustainable production and at the moment climate changes are the main focus. There are international studies, but none of these are specific adapted to the Danish production conditions. Therefore, the obvious challenge is to provide data leading to a more balanced dialogue with consumer and supplier.

Tasks

The project is completed in 2010 - 2011 and includes the following main tasks:

  • To provide an overview of the production systems for both chickens and eggs, and to define the extent of analysis from a value chain perspective.
  • Data collection and calculation to determine the climate impact in a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).
  • Final LCA reviewed by external experts
  • Results with very specific suggestions on areas, that could usefully be added into the value chain to reduce the CO2-emissions.

Development prospects

Environmental responsibility has become a global competitive tool, and those who act responsible will strengthen their market position. The business will get a solid basis for decisions made on a future climate strategy focusing on CO2-reducing innovations. The business achieves documentation and knowledge about the value chain, which can usefully be deployed to achieve a more comprehensive carbon neutral production as well as being consolidated for a fact-based dialogue and communication with retailers, suppliers and consumers.
