Poultry protection

Project

The risk of infection is high on poultry farms. Read more about our work with management systems and technologies that break the transmission cycle of disease in poultry.

Challenge

The poultry industry accounts for the largest animal production worldwide and is the most important source of protein to a rapidly increasing world. Poultry farms are characterised by vast flock sizes. Consequently, the risk of infection within and between poultry flocks is high. Estimates indicate that the global production value is reduced by about 10 % due to infections and hygiene problems.

AgroTech is involved in an innovation project called CHIP with the purpose of optimising the hygiene in poultry houses, among others, by testing new disinfection solutions and nanocoating of selected surfaces in poultry houses. The project is carried out in co-operation with companies, other technological service companies and KU-life (Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen) which together make up the value chain.

Tasks

AgroTech contributes with expertise in optimising existing housing system and poultry management practices. We implement and put into practice new breakthroughs in technology and knowledge. New technology and new products are tested in the fields of housing design and operation through our management measures.

Development perspectives

The management systems must, among others, document how nanocoating of surfaces can offer an optimal protection against the penetration and development of certain pathogenic bacteria and bacteria coating. If they succeed in doing so, the use of strong cleaning agents will be reduced, the cleaning staff’s working environment will be improved, and it will be possible to reduce the use of resources during the cleaning period.

The purpose is to develop a poultry house management concept which is adapted for broiler and table egg production. The concept must ensure a profitable and sustainable production while at the same time increasing the product safety as well as the animal health and welfare – and hence the producer’s competitiveness in terms of price and quality.
